Director

Prof Dr Carlo Menon

has a Laurea degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Space Sciences and Technologies from the University of Padua, Italy. Carlo was a visiting graduate student at external page Carnegie Mellon University, USA and spent a few years in the external page Advanced Concepts Team at the external page European Space Agency (ESA), Netherlands before moving to Simon Fraser University, Canada, receiving tenure there in 2012 and setting up the Menrva research group. He is currently Full Professor and Director of the Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology research group at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Carlo has been awarded a Tier I Canada Research Chair and has received career awards from both the external page Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the external page Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). He has also published over 200 journal articles. Outside the lab, he likes exploring new corners of scenic Switzerland. Carlo has a strong interest in translating scientific discovery into impactful technologies.

Veronika Hall Abraham

is the lab’s administrative assistant, helping us build the group from the beginning. Veronika has a BA in History from external page Queen’s University in Canada and spent a year at external page Heidelberg University in Germany as part of the external page Ontario Baden-Württemberg student exchange program. She joins us after having worked at an engineering consultancy, a hedge fund, the private banking arm of a large financial institution and a start-up in communications. When not in the office, Veronika likes to swim in Lake Zurich, travel and does her best to keep her Scrabble score consistently above 375.  


Scientists and Postdocs

Dr Chakaveh Ahmadizadeh

is a post-doctoral researcher in rehabilitation and assistive technologies with a special interest in wearable systems, with our group since March 2021. In the recent past, she was specifically researching how to address the challenges posed by human machine interfaces based on force sensitive resistors for powered prostheses. Chakaveh has a BSc in computer engineering (2014) and a PhD in biomedical engineering (2020) from external page Simon Fraser University, Canada, where she won the Undergraduate Open Scholarship, the Dean's Honour Roll, the Helmut and Hugo Eppich Family Graduate Scholarship, and the Faculty of Applied Sciences Graduate Fellowship. She has been working for Professor Menon since 2016. In her free time, Chakaveh is often hiking and camping in the forests of Switzerland, or on road trips and traveling throughout Europe.  

Dr Alexander V Shokurov

is a physical chemist with a strong interest in surface- and interface phenomena, working for us as a postdoc since October 2021. His research interests lie in biomimetics, photophysics and electrochemistry of supramolecular and self-assembled molecular systems for the rational design of nanoscale functional materials. Alexander received his Nanomaterials Engineering degree from external page Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia in 2010, and defended his PhD thesis in physical chemistry at the Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, external page Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2013. He has participated in studies in a wide set of disciplines ranging from fundamental physical chemistry and paleontology to chemosensors and molecular electronics, as well as having authored and co-authored more than 40 papers. In his free time, Alexander enjoys reading technical literature as well as works of fiction, while his vacations are usually spent doing ecotourism and whitewater rafting.

Dr Corin Otesteanu

is a research scientist with expertise in machine learning and image/signal processing for biomedical applications. His experience in medical imaging applications is multidisciplinary, in fields such as image flow cytometry, microscopy, ocular imaging, and ultrasound. Corin holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania, as well as a Master's in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Medical Imaging, both from ETH Zurich, where he was awarded an Excellence Scholarship. Corin actively contributes to the scientific community as a reviewer for IOPscience and Elsevier journals. He is passionate about leveraging his expertise to translate scientific discoveries into impactful technologies for the betterment of healthcare. When not engrossed in his work, Corin can be found indoors, training at the gym, or outdoors, hiking.

Dr Weifeng Yang

is a postdoctoral researcher in our group since July 2024, specializing in the development of electronic fibers, with a particular focus on wearable electronics and smart clothing. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from external page Donghua University in Shanghai and is dedicated to advancing human machine interfaces for smart clothing, including the fabrication and application of light-emitting, power-generating, and sensing fibers. During his doctoral studies, he was jointly trained in the research groups of external page John Ho and external page Yuxin Liu at the National University of Singapore, where he focused on wireless bioelectronics research. Weifeng has published research papers as the first author in journals such as external page Science, Nature Communications, and Advanced Materials. His work has been featured in numerous international media outlets. In his free time, Weifeng enjoys playing table tennis, swimming, and photography.

Dr Muhammad Zada

is an electronic and biomedical engineer carrying out postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich, with a special interest in textile-based antennas, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting, wireless power transfer, and implantable devices. Prior to his time at ETH Zurich, he served as a post-doctoral researcher at external page Hanyang University, South Korea. Muhammad completed his BSc in telecommunication engineering from the external page University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan, followed by his MSc and PhD studies in electronic engineering at external page Hanyang University, South Korea. Muhammad has made significant contributions to the field, with over 40 papers published in high-quality journals and conference proceedings, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Muhammad was awarded the 2018 best student paper prize from the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science (KIEES) and the best PhD thesis award in February 2023 from Hanyang University, South Korea. Outside of his research, Muhammad enjoys exploring new places, hiking, and watching movies, especially adventure or science fiction movies.

Dr Satyaranjan Bairagi

is a textile engineer specialising in e-textiles for health monitoring applications, in our group since December 2024. His main research interests are textile-based energy harvesting materials and devices. Satya earned both his B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in textile engineering from the external page University of Calcutta, India and holds a doctorate from the external page Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, India. He received the IEI Young Engineer Award 2023-2024 from the Institute of Engineers India and the 2021 Distinction in Doctoral Research award from his department at IIT Delhi. After his PhD, Satya was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where he developed advanced triboelectric nanogenerators based on textiles, yarns and fabrics made using various technologies such as weaving, knitting, braiding, and electrospinning. He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal publications and 2 patents, edited 2 books and published 30 book chapters. Satya’s hobbies are swimming, reading, playing table tennis, football, cricket and watching movies.
 


PhD Students

Valeria Galli

is a doctoral researcher who joined our lab in October 2021. She has a BSc in biomedical engineering (2016) and an MSc in biomechanics and biomaterials (2019) from external page Politecnico di Milano in Italy. In the past, she has done research in the field of point of care diagnostics with microfluidic systems and computational fluid dynamics—in collaboration with another group at ETH Zurich. Before joining our group, Valeria worked as an EarlyStage Researcher in an EU-funded project in the field of computer modelling and simulation in cardiology. Her interest in wearable technologies for health span the range from motion tracking to monitoring bio-signals connected to emotions, aiming to create mobile health devices that fit into the user’s life seamlessly and are widely applicable. In her free time, Valeria also enjoys running and hiking, listening to classical music, or travelling around Switzerland and beyond.

Maria Papaefstathiou

is a doctoral researcher who joined our lab in September 2022. She is interested in the fabrication of intelligent, flexible textiles and their application in wearable electronics. Maria has an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from external page the Imperial College London and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the external page University of Cyprus. Before joining us, Maria worked as a Biomedical Device Officer for about a year at a medical device startup, and she comes to our group as a winner of the external page Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship. Outside the lab, Maria likes to run, especially along forest trails, of which there are plenty to explore in Switzerland.
 

Shuaixin Qi

is a doctoral researcher with a keen interest in human factors and human-machine interaction. Holding a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Robotics, both from ETH Zurich, Shuaixin has previously worked on the external page VariLeg team, where he contributed to the development of an exoskeleton for paraplegic pilots for the Cybathlon. Before joining our group, he worked as a research assistant at ETH Zurich, focusing on occupational safety and ergonomics studies. His work on pedestrian safety was recognized by an award from the external page German Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. His current project, funded by the German Social Accident Insurance (external page DGUV), aims to improve visibility aids in mobile machinery to prevent accidents. Outside of work, Shuaixin is passionate about board games, swimming, snowboarding, and experimenting with diverse culinary techniques from around the world.  

Yuanlong Li

is interested in the fabrication of flexible sensors generally and in medical signal analysis, too. He holds a BSc in Measurement & Control Technology and Instrumentation from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications as well as an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University, both in China. Before joining us, Yuanlong worked at external page GE HealthCare in their Clinical Applications team. When he is outside the lab, Yuanlong enjoys hiking, going to the gym and listening to post-rock music.

Alexandre Luster

is a PhD student who joined our group in January 2024. He has a particular interest in using data-driven approaches to improve human health. Alex earned his MSc in Life Sciences Engineering & Data Science from external page EPFL, and carried out his Master’s thesis at the external page Harvard Medical School where he studied sleep using intracranial recordings as a recipient of the external page Bertarelli Fellowship. During his PhD, Alex will research wearable sensing technology for sleep monitoring. In collaboration with external page ZURZACH Care, he will use this technology to evaluate the efficacy of a novel sleep therapy targeting individuals with traumatic brain injury. He will be co-supervised by external page Prof. Dr. med. Peter S. Sándor, Medical Director of Neurology & Psyche at external page ZURZACH Care. Alex’s project is generously funded by the external page Canton of Aargau. Outside of work, you might find Alex climbing up a rock, balancing over a slackline, running on a trail or playing some classical music on the piano.

Pranav Ambhorkar

is a doctoral researcher who joined the group in March 2024. In research, he is interested in studying altered human physiology through the lens of engineering. Specifically, he is interested in developing novel neuromodulation protocols for entraining and modifying sleep physiology. Before starting at ETH Zurich, Pranav was selected for the competitive young-graduate-trainee (YGT) program at the external page European Space Agency, where, as a part of the Advanced Concepts Team (Advanced Concepts Team of ESA), under the broad theme of future human spaceflight, he conducted research in topics including materials science and hibernation physiology. He completed his bachelor’s (BASc.) and master’s (MASc.) degrees in mechanical engineering at the external page University of British Columbia and wrote his master’s thesis on external page 3D-biofabrication for tissue engineering . Pranav’s research is co-funded by the European Space Agency through its competitive discovery element (Open Space Innovation Platform) external page grant. Outside the lab, Pranav is quite fond of eastern philosophy, enjoys classical boxing and reading science fiction.

Pierre Kateb

is a doctoral researcher in our group since September 2024. He has a BSc (2021) and an MSc (2023) in biomedical engineering from external page Polytechnique Montréal in Canada. Pierre has been awarded PhD scholarships from the external page Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the external page Quebec Research Fund. He previously completed a semester project with us in 2023 as a visiting student. Prior to joining our research group, Pierre worked on stretchable epidermal electrodes for premature infants using conductive polymers at the external page Laboratory of Organic Iontronics at Polytechnique Montréal. He is interested in wearable sensors and the applications of conductive polymers. In his free time, Pierre enjoys playing music, Arduino programming and beekeeping.

Carlotta Marinai

is currently completing a semester-long visiting period with us. She holds both a BSc (2019) and an MSc (2022) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa. Her PhD research focuses on applying textile pressure matrix sensors to design, develop, and industrialize unobtrusive devices for real-time monitoring in health and sports applications.

Before joining our team, Carlotta began her research journey as a fellow at the Research Center E. Piaggio, working on a sensorized saddle cover for performance monitoring in elite cyclists. As a PhD student, she contributed to the European Project TOLIFE, which aims to manage COPD patients; specifically, she developed a smart mattress cover to monitor physiological and environmental parameters unobtrusively on a daily basis. Additionally, she gained experience with sensorized socks (EphiSPA Project) and high-heeled shoes (WearART Project) for gait and postural analysis. Outside the lab, Carlotta enjoys trekking, practicing gymnastics, and kickboxing.

Design data acquisition solution for smart clothing

After completing Business School with an emphasis on IT, then gaining initial professional experience in the banking sector, Igor has now chosen to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.

Igor is completing a semester project with us as part of a Master of Science EEIT degree. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on Prof. Andreas Hierlemann’s “Enhancing NeuroCMOS: Software and Documentation Improvements for Robust System Performance” project in the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering’s (BSSE).

When he's not in the lab, Igor spends his time either reading a book or embracing new and unfamiliar experiences, challenging himself to learn and achieve things he's never attempted before—whether it's sewing a shirt for a festival, tackling white-water kayaking, or embarking on a bike tour across Norway.

Fotini is completing a Master’s semester project with us in Winter Semester 2024. Fotini is interested in research questions relating to movement biomechanics and data-driven diagnostics of musculoskeletal disorders. Prior to joining our research group, Fotini worked on optimising the preprocessing of knee acoustic emissions data in the Lower Extremities Research Lab at external page Schulthess Klinik, as part of theexternal page Sensemodi knee brace project. In her free time, Fotini enjoys going to gym classes, drawing, and playing board games.

Being italian, he has a passion for good food, but his hobbies also include swimming, playing videogames and watching movies.

In his spare time, Leonardo is either working on his DIY robotic projects, playing chess or going for walks.

Dr Moe Elgendi

received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from external page Charles Darwin University, Australia. Over the past decade, he worked as a research assistant, tutor, lecturer, research associate, and postdoctoral fellow at various universities, including external page Nanyang Technological University, external page University of Alberta, external page University of British Columbia, external page University of Manitoba, and external page Simon Fraser University. Moe has 10+ years of experience in machine learning, algorithm development, data analysis, data visualization, evaluation, knowledge translation and received specialized training in big data analysis and leadership in education from the external page Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Moe serves on the editorial board for external page Frontiers in Signal Processing and as a guest editor for external page Physiological Measurement, external page Frontiers in Digital Health and external page Frontiers in Physiology. He has also been the recipient of over 10 competitive grants and published over 100 scientific works. Away from his research, Moe likes to immerse himself in local culture, exploring Switzerland’s splendid sights but also enjoying local soccer leagues.

Dr Yinghong Wu

is a material scientist who worked in our group from September 2021 to March 2024. She is particularly interested in biomechanical energy harvesting and conversion, smart textiles, and wearable electronics. Yinghong received her PhDs in Chemical Technology from the Institute of Process Engineering, external page Chinese Academy of Sciences in the People's Republic of China and in Energy and Environment from external page City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region), the People's Republic of China in 2020. She has completed previous postdoctoral research at the external page University of Hong Kong. Yinghong was awarded the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ University Dean’s Scholarship in 2020. In 2018, she was a visiting student at external page Hokkaido University in Japan. Outside her experiments, Yinghong enjoys learning languages, exploring interesting corners of Europe and watching classic movies.

Dr Sunil Kumar Sailapu

is an interdisciplinary scientist who worked in our group from December 2021 to December 2023. His research explores autonomous and self-powered systems/devices, biomedical engineering, alternative computing, chemical- and biosensors. Sunil has a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Andhra University, and a PhD in Nanotechnology from external page IIT Guwahati. He worked in an ERC funded project aimed at developing self-powered devices for biomedical applications as a postdoc at the external page Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC). As a recipient of the TECNIOspring PLUS and Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship, Sunil further expanded his research activities through collaborations with IMB-CNM, the external page University of Geneva and the startup FUELIUM for exploring self-powered ion sensors. Sunil holds patents for his inventions and aims to translate results from laboratory research to real-world use. Sunil also enjoys playing cricket, volleyball, badminton, chess, and skateboarding.

Dr Debkalpa (Deb) Goswami

Deb is now a faculty member and Director of Biomechanics at external page the Cleveland Clinic's Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center in Ohio, USA. He is broadly interested in fabrication and manufacturing strategies for medical devices and implants. Before joining our group in September 2022, Deb was a postdoctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (external page MIT), USA, where he developed therapeutic technologies for obstructive sleep apnea and type 1 diabetes, and patient-specific models for degenerative cardiovascular diseases. He completed his PhD in May 2020 at external page Purdue University, USA, where his interdisciplinary research spanned the areas of soft robotics, biomedical sensors, 3D printing, flexible electronics, metamaterials, and scalable nanofabrication. Deb received his Bachelor’s degree in June 2015 from Jadavpur University, India, and spent a year as a visiting researcher at the external page University of Bremen, Germany, where he worked on the optimization of semiconductor manufacturing systems. He has received several internationally competitive fellowships including the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2020), the Ross Fellowship (2015), and the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship (2013). Outside the lab, Deb takes pleasure in travelling the world, watching soccer matches and visiting art galleries.

Dr Tyler Cuthbert

is a synthetic chemist with expertise in inert atmosphere chemistry, polymer synthesis, and structure-property relationships, with our lab 2021-2023 and working for Professor Menon since 2018. He designs multi-functional polymers from the molecular level to introduce new functionality to bulk materials. His interests lie in developing and applying stimuli-responsive and autonomous molecular systems to textiles and composites for use in wearable devices. Tyler received his PhD in Chemistry from the external page University of Western Ontario, Canada in 2016 and has completed previous postdoctoral research at the external page University of Victoria, Canada and external page Simon Fraser University, Canada. He was awarded a Canadian NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2019 and a Faculty of Science Graduate Student Teaching Award in 2016. In his time off, you can find Tyler ski touring in the Alps, rock climbing, mountain biking, or kiteboarding.

Brett Hannigan

is a researcher particularly interested in control theory, optimization, signal processing and applying these to wearable sensor systems for tracking human movement, who completed his PhD in our group in 2024. external page Brett has an MASc in Biomedical Engineering from the external page University of British Columbia and a BASc in Biomedical Engineering from external page Simon Fraser University, both in Canada. Brett has worked for Carlo for two years and has previously worked at a medical device start-up company. He was a past recipient of a external page Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship to work with an industry partner as well as Faculty of Applied Science Graduate Fellowships. In his time away from the lab, Brett can be found alpine skiing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and working on anything mechanical.

Xin Zhang

is completing a one-year project with us as a visiting PhD student funded by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). He joined our group in December 2022. Xin’s research interests focus on electrospinning, e-textiles, and wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for energy harvesting and sensing. Xin received his Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in Polymer Materials and Engineering from external page Donghua University, China, in June 2018. He then started the postgraduate and doctoral program as a PhD candidate majoring in external page Materials Processing Engineering. Xin was named an “Outstanding Student Leader” in 2021 and received the Donghua University’s Graduate Student Innovation Fund in 2022. When not working in the lab, Xin is usually playing badminton, swimming or watching films and TV series. He also enjoys to travel and hopes to explore more European cities during his stay at ETH Zurich.

Tomasz Raczyński

is a PhD student at external page Warsaw University of Technology, Poland. For his PhD thesis, he is developing a pressure matrix printed on a textile to help patients at risk for bedsores. Tomasz is completing a PhD project with us as the winner of a external page Mobility PW grant. He will be working on developing flexible insoles with pressure sensors to help people living with diabetes.

Tomasz holds an MSc in Mechatronics Engineering and a BSE in Engineering, both from Warsaw University of Technology, Poland. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on screen printed ECG electrodes in the external page CEZAMAT laboratory and screen printed pH sensors at the Warsaw University of Technology. Tomasz has 7+ years of experience in printed electronics with a focus on screen printing on flexible materials in general and textiles specifically. Last year, as part of a team of students, he won an international external page James Dyson Award with his project “smart wound dressing”. Tomasz enjoys playing board games, reading fantasy literature, and brewing good coffee. He also takes great pleasure in sailing.

Prior to joining our research group, external page Julian worked on "Advancing Spinal Fusion Surgery Predictions" at the Institute for Biomechanics at Balgrist Campus and "Quantifying dopamine with nanopipettes" at the Laboratory for Biosensors and Bioelectronics. Julian is a passionate climber, if he is not at the Campus, you will likely find him climbing some stone or plastic.

Prior to joining our research group, he worked on learning quasi-static mechanics simulations using graph neural networks in the Computational Mechanics Group led by Prof. Laura De Lorenzis. In his Bachelor’s thesis project, Janik focused on analysing wear in the diamond wire sawing process in the Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF). His free time is mainly determined by sports, whether at home skiing or at the university playing volleyball or visiting the gym.

He has also worked for leading medical technology companies Zimmer Biomet and Stryker, completing internships in the research and development of artificial joints. Shuo was born in Beijing, China. He got his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Tianjin University’s School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering (external page SPIOEE) in Tianjin, China. Shuo is interested in various sports including archery, rock climbing, swimming and running. He’s also a big fan of metal music.

A new methodology to construct ECG signals via smartphone cameras

Giuseppe completed a Master’s thesis with us as an exchange student in 2022/2023. He is interested in researching wearable technology, human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and artificial intelligence (AI). At Politecnico di Torino, he founded external page ExMAH, a student team to create a 3D-printed forearm prosthesis using electromyography (EMG) technology, a method of recording electrical impulses that originate from muscles. Giuseppe is originally from Sicily in Italy: he enjoys the sea and the sun. During his free time, he can be found going out with his friends, playing soccer or watching soccer with his friends.

Prior to joining our research group, she studied physics: mainly statistical and quantum physics, but she was fascinated by computational science and sees this research opportunity to make a tangible impact in health care. Coming from Tunisia, Syrine enjoys everything nautical, like sailing or windsurfing.

Prior to joining our research group, he worked on developing an algorithm for semantic segmentation of a concentric tube robot at the external page Robotics and Vision in Medicine Lab of King's College London. His hobbies include sports and indoor hydroponics: when not working in the lab he's most likely at the gym or tending to his capsicum annuum 'Jalapeño', solanum lycopersicum or citrullus lanatus.

Lalida completed a Master’s semester project as well as a Master's thesis project in our group in 2021-2022, as part of her Master’s in biomedical engineering: bioimaging. Before coming to ETH Zurich, she finished her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering in her homeland, Thailand. When not studying, she likes singing songs in Thai and English. She can also sing some Chinese and Spanish songs. She might be able to sing in German in the future. Lalida also enjoys running, traveling, sleeping, and playing badminton.

Ben carried out a semester project with us in 2022 in collaboration with ReLab as part of his Master’s studies in Robotics, Systems, and Control. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on multimodal prosthetic control at the external page German Aerospace Centre in Munich, and on a modular prosthesis at the University of Alberta’s external page BLINC Lab. When not in the lab or searching for missing semicolons, Ben enjoys jogging, cycling in the mountains, and searching for a new café/reading spot.

Hugo completed a Master’s semester project with us in 2022. Prior to joining our research group, he completed his BSc in Microtechnologies at external page EPFL. He is now pursuing an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, with a strong interest in robotics for medicine. Growing up in Paris, France, Hugo was always interested in the sciences but he also enjoys playing tennis, going rock climbing, or learning about various cultures by travelling around the world. When not experimenting in the lab, Hugo is experimenting with food in the kitchen, which is greatly appreciated by his hungry flatmates.

Delia finished a Master’s semester project with us in 2022 as part of her Master’s in Electrical Engineering. Prior to joining our research group, she was an assistant in Prof. Qiuting Huang’s course on electronic circuits (see also the Institute of Integrated Systems). A native of Ticino, Delia enjoys hiking in Switzerland’s southern region. Her hobbies include reading Japanese manga, watching detective TV shows and building PCs.

Developing High Gauge Factor Fiber Piezocapacitive sensors with Conductive Nanomaterial Polymer Composites through Rational Structural and Architecture Design

It wasn’t enough for Pierre to have a foot in France, Poland and Germany already, he wanted to add Switzerland to the list, too. As an exchange student, he completed a six-month master’s project in nanomaterials with us in 2021, including writing a thesis. Outside the lab, Pierre enjoys road cycling and bouldering.

Pierre is now studying for his PhD at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (external page TU Delft) on the topic of designing precision micro-mechanical metamaterials, supervised by external page Professor Just Herder in the external page Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering.

Building Effective Machine Learning Models for Ankle Joint Power Estimation during Walking using FMG Sensors and Robotic Hand Orthosis for Therapy and Assistance in Activities of Daily Living

For his Master’s in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics, control and system theory, Oliver switched from analyzing music scores at Sony to analyzing ankle joint power in our research group in 2021. His semester project was in collaboration with Professor Dr Xianta Jiang at external page Memorial University, Canada. Oliver decided to complete a second project in our group: a Master's thesis project for tenoexo in collaboration with doctoral candidate Jessica Gantenbein from the Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory (ReLab) in 2022. In his down time, Oliver is a music aficionado and vinyl collector who gets a kick out of hearing something he has never heard before.

Development of Functional Carbon-based Additives for Sensing

Federico was testing the strain of various polymers in a semester project with us in 2021 as part of his work towards a Master’s in Applied Chemistry. When he was done for the day, he tested the strain of the cooking equipment in his student apartment kitchen by whipping up meals for a taste of home in Sicily, Italy. Federico has since completed his Master’s degree at ETH Zurich.

In 2023, Wenshan carried out a Bachelor’s project with us as a winner of the CN Yang Nanyang Scholarship and an NTU President Research Scholar. Prior to joining our research group, she worked on developing an automated tool for brain MRI segmentation at the external page Center for Brain-Computing Research, polishing genome assembly from Nanopore reads at the external page Genome Institute of Singapore, and a missing protein recovery problem in NTU's external page Bio-Data Science and Education Laboratory. Wenshan is good at playing table tennis and the external page Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument.

Linus wrote a Bachelor’s thesis with us in 2021. When he is not sitting at his desk, Linus is probably kitesurfing or training for a triathlon.
